Feng Shui focuses on creating a balanced, harmonious space, whether it is in a room, a house, or a swimming pool. It is based on an ancient Chinese practice of creating a positive energy flow, called “chi,” in your life and space. For your outdoor space, the ultimate goal is to have a calming pool environment for your family and friends, as well as a source of relaxation and fun.

If you haven’t had your swimming pool installed yet, you can follow the precepts of Feng Shui in its design. Even if the pool is part of your surroundings already, you can incorporate this philosophy into everything around the pool.

In this article, we will provide some basics about poolside Feng Shui, why Feng Shui is relevant to outdoor design, and some key concepts for maximizing the positive energy of your pool’s Feng Shui.

What Is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui, which translates to “the way of wind water”, has become a popular philosophy all over the world. Its practice focuses on the idea that every object, including a swimming pool and the area around it, either enhances or diminishes our well-being and prosperity. If an object’s placement contributes to the balance in a space, it leads to health and good fortune for the people who use the object in that space.

Feng Shui is based on the five elements of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. In swimming pool design and landscaping, water is the most powerful of these elements.  Feng Shui tells us that water brings us good luck and abundance. The theory is that the flow of water is the same as the flow of life’s energy, or “chi.” There are ways to incorporate the other four elements, too, with the materials used around the pool and how they are arranged.

By incorporating Feng Shui in pool design, you can create a harmonious and balanced outdoor space that creates a sense of relaxation and well-being. And, the area around any pool can enhance the Feng Shui of the entire home.

Feng Shui for New Pool Placement & Design

If your swimming pool hasn’t been built yet, you can use Feng Shui principles to place the pool to create the most calming environment. Let’s explore this topic a little deeper:

Importance of Pool Location

The location of every element in your home, including the swimming pool, matters. With Feng Shui, each direction on the compass corresponds to aspects of life like wealth, health, and relationships. You can strengthen a particular area of your life by placing the pool in the corresponding location.

The view of the water in a swimming pool also relates to Feng Shui principles. These principles consider a water view beneficial. The most advantageous placement is so the pool can be seen through a window as you enter the front door of your home. This connects the “chi” of the water in the pool with the interior of your home. It should not be placed too close to the house, though, or the energy will be blocked.

Placing the pool in the south, northeast, or southwest corners of the land around your home can lead to the other elements clashing. Choosing the other corners or at the sides of the yard is believed to bring positive energy to your home.  A pool at the center of the space is said to bring bad luck.

Pool Shape

The best pool shapes according to Feng Shui are round, curved, oval-shaped, or kidney-shaped pools. These shapes allow the flow of energy to be gentle movement without any obstructions, like corners or sharp edges.

If your pool is already in the ground and it is rectangular or square, you can mitigate the negative effect of sharp edges. You do this with hedges, flowers, or other decorative landscape pieces to soften the edges, especially if those edges point toward the house. These types of additions are often low-cost, too.

Feng Shui for Your Pool Area

Aside from the pool location and shape, there are other Feng Shui tips and tricks to bring this calming, harmonious environment to your pool area. These can be easily worked into an existing pool area:

– Add a fence around the pool, preferably wood (to work in one of the other main elements), to protect your pool and home and bring good fortune to your family.

– The earth element balances the water element so use cement or brick pavers near the pool. These earth tones are soothing to look at and help maintain balanced Feng Shui.

– Use furniture and cushions in earth shades of color including sand, brown, and burnt orange.

– Add another element of Feng Shui, fire, by using torches and candles around the pool and yard. If you want to take it up another level, this can also be accomplished with metal fire bowls or built-in fire pits or fireplaces as part of your outdoor design.

– Feng Shui places great importance on the lighting of the pool. Make sure your pool is beautifully lit, the lighting creates no shadowy corners, and harsh lighting is avoided.

– Your pool must be kept clean for optimal Feng Shui. Dirty water destroys chi and fresh, clean water amplifies it. Proper filtration and effective water maintenance with regular cleaning are all essential.

– Metal is another Feng Shui element and various accessories for water features come in copper, aluminum, and stainless steel. These might be scuppers, spouts, funnel tubes, fire bowls, and water bowls.

– Statues or decorative aquatic life in brass, bronze, and steel can add beauty to your pool as well as work in the metal element.

– Patio furniture in wood or metal can combine Feng Shui elements, too.
